ABOUT SAVE THE CHILDREN
Save the Children is the leading independent organization creating lasting change in the lives of children in need in the United States and around the world. Recognized for our commitment to accountability, innovation and collaboration, our work takes us into the heart of communities, where we help children and families help themselves. We work with other organizations, governments, non-profits and a variety of local partners while maintaining our own independence without political agenda or religious orientation.
When disaster strikes around the world, Save the Children is there to save lives with food, medical care and education and remains to help communities rebuild through long-term recovery programs. As quickly and as effectively as Save the Children responds to tsunamis and civil conflict, it works to resolve the ongoing struggles children face every day - poverty, hunger, illiteracy and disease - and replaces them with hope for the future.
ABOUT SAVE THE CHILDREN LONG ISLAND COUNCIL.
Save the Children Long Island Council was founded in 1984 by Susan Lassen and M.L. Galston in response to a devastating famine in Ethiopia. From the small luncheon party they hosted at the very beginning, the Council has gone on to raise over $3.5 million dollars in the following years, which were distributed to Save the Children programs worldwide. The Council is made up of a Working Board of about 25 volunteers and is aided by a group of Council Partners. We focus locally on fundraising, education and building awareness.
In our most important decision, the board votes on the distribution of funds raised here on Long Island at our annual meeting in September. With the advice and guidance of the national organization, we allocate funding to the Save the Children programs that are in most need each year. In fiscal year 2009, the average of donations used directly for program services was 90%.
